Abstract

    Resonance-like enhancements of generalized multi-photon cross sections for extreme ultraviolet ionization of noble-gas atoms are demonstrated and analyzed within a single-active-electron, central-potential model. The resonant-like behavior is shown to originate from the potential barriers experienced by intermediate- and final-state photoelectron wave packets corresponding to absorption of one, two, or three photons. Within the same photon energy range where the potential barrier effects happen, one-photon ionization time delays are calculated for both noble-gas and halogen atoms. The time-dependent local-density approximation is used to include electron interactions. The calculations show that halogen atoms bear a strong resemblance on ionization cross section, asymmetry parameter and time delay to their noble-gas neighbors. Our predicted time delay should provide a guidance for future experiments on those atoms and related molecules.
